The Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) was established to improve the state’s disaster preparedness, recovery, and resilience. Collaboration with Local Governments
A key aspect of the QRA’s approach is its collaboration with local governments. The authority has developed regional masterplans that prioritise flood warning infrastructure needs based on local conditions and risks. These masterplans guide the allocation of resources and funding, ensuring equitable and effective enhancements to the flood warning network.
Local councils also play a role in maintaining and operating flood warning assets. For example, the QRA has supported councils in using data from these systems to improve community preparedness. This support helps develop tailored flood response plans.
Improving Flood Communication
Beyond the physical infrastructure, the QRA emphasises effective communication as a cornerstone of flood risk management. Initiatives like the Queensland Flood Website and Flood Communication Toolkit help councils deliver consistent and clear messaging to communities. These tools ensure that residents understand flood warnings, evacuation routes, and preparedness measures.
Resilience Building and Long-Term Planning
The QRA’s work extends to fostering resilience against future floods. It aligns its initiatives with the Queensland Strategy for Disaster Resilience and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The authority integrates flood risk management with broader resilience strategies. This approach aims to reduce the social, economic, and environmental impacts of floods.
